Advent is here once again, with Christmas around the corner. American Saints and Causes prays that you are able to find time in this busy season to pause and reflect on the amazing event of Jesus' incarnation that we are about to celebrate. Many of you are also purchasing gifts for friends and family. This year, consider giving a gift that introduces your loved one to the holy men and women of the United States! You just might inspire them to a greater love of God. Here are some great options:
1. Voyage Comics. Voyage Comics is an incredible company producing wonderful content to inspire kids to live the faith. Voyage has published comics on a number of the holy men and women of the United States and plans to produce more in the coming years. Check our their comics on Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, Venerable Nelson Baker, Venerable Patrick Peyton, Venerable Rose Hawthorne, and Servant of God Joe Walijewski. Your kids will love these and other Voyage products!
2. Picture Books. There are some great picture books that can introduce young children to holy examples from the United States. For example, Julia Greeley, Secret Angel of the Poor is a beautiful story about one of the people who might become the first African-American canonized. Junipero Serra: Founder of the California Missions is a great introduction to St. Serra. Fulton Sheen and the Very Bad Week tells stories from Venerable Sheen's childhood that are relatable for kids. Blessed Stanley Rohter: An Extraordinary Ordinary Life introduces the life of the first US-born martyr.
3. Young Adult Readers. Older children might enjoy books from the Vision and the Encounter the Saints series. An American Little Flower tells the story of Blessed Miriam Teresa Demjanovich, the first person to have their beatification occur in the United States. Cechchina's Dream tells the story of Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini, Daughter of America recounts Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton's life, and Missionary to Immigrants tells the story of the only canonized American bishop, St. John Neumann.
4. Books for Adult Readers. We haven't forgotten about adults on your list either! A great introduction to a number of American saints candidates would be Michael O'Neill's They Might Be Saints. Veterans and those interested in military history might like The Miracle of Father Kapaun, which tells the story of Servant of God Emil Kapun, one of several Medal of Honor recipients on the path to sainthood. Kevin Wells' Priest and Begger introduces Venerable Al Schwartz to people, someone whose story is every bit as fascinating as Mother Theresa's. Thank God Ahead of Time tells the story and spirituality of the delightful porter of Detroit, Blessed Solanus Casey.
